Kyoto: Airport Transfers

Kyoto, an essential city known for its historic temples and traditions, doesn't have its own major airport. Tourism and business travellers usually land at two nearby airports: Kansai International Airport (KIX) and Itami Airport.

Kansai International Airport (KIX)

The journey from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto city centre is about 75-90 minutes.

  • Airport Limousine Bus: The easiest way to get to Kyoto from KIX is by the direct Airport Limousine Bus. This departs approximately every 30-60 minutes. The journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes and costs around JPY 2,550 ($23).
  • JR Haruka Limited Express Train: Often the fastest way, taking around 75 minutes to reach Kyoto Station, with prices at JPY 3,370 ($30) per ticket. With a Japan Rail Pass, this journey is covered at no additional cost.
  • JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service: This train service is a cheaper but slower option, taking approximately 1 hour 45 minutes and costing JPY 1,880 ($17).

Itami Airport

Itami Airport is closer to Kyoto, and the travel time to the city centre is about 50-70 minutes.

  • Airport Limousine Bus: A direct bus from Itami to Kyoto Station runs approximately every 20 minutes. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and costs JPY 1,310 ($12).
  • Taxi: Although quick, taking a taxi from Itami to Kyoto can be expensive, around JPY 13,000 ($117)–JPY 17,000 ($153). The journey time is around 50 minutes, depending on the traffic.
  • Monorail and train: Another option is to take the monorail to Hotarugaike Station (5 minutes, JPY 270 / $2.50), then take the Hankyu Takarazuka Line train to Juso Station (15 minutes, JPY 270 / $2.50), and then transfer to the Hankyu Kyoto Line train to Kyoto (40 minutes, JPY 400 / $3.60).

Note: Be sure to factor in potential traffic, and train and bus schedules, especially when returning to the airport from Kyoto. Prices are approximate and subject to change. Train and bus services may be interrupted due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.
