Kyoto's Local Beverages

When visiting Kyoto, ensure to try some of the traditional and unique local beverages the city has to offer.

Sake

Kyoto has several renowned sake breweries, where you can experience a tasting. Be sure to try "Gekkeikan" and "Kizakura", both reputable brands with their breweries located right in the city.

Yuzushu

This local specialty is a type of liqueur, where yuzu (a local citrus fruit) is steeped in sake. It has a refreshing, slightly sweet taste that is perfect after a day of sightseeing.

Matcha Tea

Kyoto is famous for its high-quality matcha tea. It's an integral part of Japanese tea ceremonies and is also popular in everyday use. Try it pure, or enjoy it in various desserts and sweets.

Umeboshi Sour

A truly unique local drink, umeboshi sour is a cocktail made from shochu distilled liquor, soda, and umeboshi (pickled plum). It's a tart and refreshing beverage, perfect for those with an adventurous palate.

Whisky

Although not traditionally associated with Kyotoese whisky has gained global acclaim. Yamazaki distillery, Japan's first whisky distillery, is located just outside the city and is worth a visit.

Amazake

This is a traditional sweet, low-alcohol or non-alcoholic Japanese drink made from fermented rice. It's often enjoyed during New Year's celebrations or at local festivals, and is served either warm or chilled, often garnished with a pickled cherry blossom.

Non-alcoholic drinks

Beyond matcha and amazake, there are other non-alcoholic options to try. Mugicha (barley tea) is a staple during hot summer months, while genmaicha (green tea with roasted brown rice) is a comforting choice in cooler weather. A variety of fruit-infused waters, green teas, and herbal teas are also readily available throughout Kyoto.
