Day Trips and Excursions from Kyoto
Nara
Less than an hour's journey from Kyoto, Nara is an enchanting city that was once the capital of Japan. It is renowned for its Todai-ji Temple, housing a massive bronze statue of Buddha. Nara Park, with its friendly, free-roaming deer, is also a must-visit. Full day trips are recommended.
Osaka
Osaka, known for its modern architecture, vibrant nightlife, and scrumptious street food, is only about half an hour from Kyoto. Explore the Osaka Castle, or visit Universal Studios Japan for a day of fun-filled adventure. A full day trip is suggested.
Hiroshima
The city, which is identifiable from its tragic past, has transformed into a symbol of peace. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum provide a sobering look into history. The journey from Kyoto takes approximately two hours via shinkansen (bullet train). A full day trip would suffice.
Arashiyama
Only thirty minutes west of central Kyoto, Arashiyama is noted for its enchanting bamboo grove. Other attractions include the Togetsukyo Bridge and Tenryuji Temple. A half-day excursion is enough to cover most of its highlights.
Himeji
Discover Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, about an hour's journey from Kyoto. Known as the 'White Heron Castle', it offers breathtaking views of the city. A half-day trip is usually adequate - this can be combined with a visit to Kobe.
Kobe
An industrial city surrounded by a verdant mountain range, Kobe is approximately an hour from Kyoto. The city boasts a vibrant port, diverse architecture, and delicious, famed Kobe beef. A half-day trip is recommended.
