Getting from the Airport to Shanghai City Centre

Shanghai serves as a major gateway to China, facilitated by two main airports: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). Here's how you can get to the city centre from each airport.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to City Centre

  • Maglev Train: The Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) train offers the fastest connection between PVG and the city. It takes just 8 minutes to reach Longyang Road Metro Station, where you can transfer to the Shanghai Metro. Operating hours are 6:45 AM to 9:40 PM. A single trip costs about 50 RMB (with a valid air ticket from the same day, you can get it for 40 RMB), and a round-trip is about 80 RMB.

  • Metro: Line 2 connects PVG to the city centre and is a cost-effective option, taking about 60 minutes. The fare is around 7 RMB to 9 RMB depending on your destination in the city. Note that the Metro operates from around 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

  • Airport Shuttle Bus: Several shuttle bus routes run from PVG to various locations in Shanghai. The journey takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and destination, with fares ranging from 22 RMB to 30 RMB.

  • Taxi: Taxis provide door-to-door service, taking about 50 minutes to an hour to the city centre, but they are more expensive, especially during the night. A daytime trip typically costs around 200 RMB, while nighttime charges (11 PM to 5 AM) can go up to 240 RMB.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) to City Centre

  • Metro: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is well connected by Metro Lines 2 and 10. Line 2 goes through major city spots including the city centre, making it a convenient and economic choice. The travel time to the city centre is about 30 minutes, and it costs around 5 RMB.

  • Airport Shuttle Bus: There are shuttle buses from SHA to various parts of the city, taking about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your destination and costing about 20 RMB to 30 RMB.

  • Taxi: Taxis offer a comfortable and direct route to your destination. The ride to the city centre takes about 30 minutes, and the fare is approximately 70 RMB during the day. Night charges may slightly be higher.
